Biographical / Historical

Esther Leona Guthrie was born in 1929 in near Lafayette, in Allen County, Ohio, a daughter of Rev. Joseph L. and Elsie (Teagarden) Guthrie. Her father was a minister in the Church of the Brethren. Esther graduated from Lafayette Jackson High School in 1947.

In May 1955, Esther graduated from the Miami Valley Hospital School of Nursing in Dayton, Ohio, where she was the Student Nurse Social Director. She was an active member, and twice president (1962-1964 and 1988-1992), of the Miami Valley Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association for many decades. She later earned graduate degrees (M.Ed., 1962, and S.Ed., 1970) in counseling from Miami University in Oxford.

In addition to being a graduate of Miami Valley Hospital, Esther spent the majority of her career as a health and education professional with Miami Valley Hospital as well. She served as Head Nurse, Psychiatry (1955-1957), Supervisor of Specialties (1957-1958), and later Support nurse for Day Therapy and Mental Health Nursing (1986-1987) at Miami Valley Hospital. In the MVH School of Nursing, she served as an Instructor of Pediatric Nursing (1958-1960), Maternal-Child Health Coordinator (1960-1964), Guidance Counselor/Psychologist (1966-1986), and Instructor in Community Health Nursing (1985-1986). Later in her career, she was Nursing Home Administrator at Crestview Nursing Home in Dayton (1987-1988), then Director of Nursing (1988-1992) and Nursing Home Administrator (1992-1994) at Friends Care Center in Yellow Springs, before retiring.

Her other professional activities included serving as President of the District 10 Ohio Nurses Association (ONA), President of Western Ohio League of Nursing (part of the National League for Nursing), Advisory Boards of the Dayton Institute of A. Adler Psychology, Sinclair College Nursing Program, Board of Trustees at Friends Care Center, Greene County Commission on Aging and the Greene County Guidance Center, member of a regional group on nursing sponsored by the Ohio Department of Health and Continuing Education Committee of ONA.

Esther married Max M. Hofferbert in 1956. They had no children, which, in Esther’s own words, was “one reason I was able to be so active professionally.” The couple resided in Xenia for many years. Esther was inducted into the Greene County Women’s Hall of Fame in 2009.
