Abstract Joyce Wolfe was one of the first students of Josephine Schwarz. She maintained correspondence with her teacher afterwards and eventually began collecting papers related to her. Josephine Schwarz was considered a pioneer of dance in Dayton, starting with the Schwarz School of Dance, which she founded in Dayton with her sister Hermene. Joyce Whitmore Aviation Scrapbook (MS-456)

The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings and photographs chronicling Joyce Whitmore’s life as a student pilot in the Civilian Pilot Training Program at the College of Idaho in Caldwell. Contents include newspaper articles she wrote about her experience, photographs of her classmates and instructors, and photographs of aircraft and airports she encountered throughout the western United States. Whitmore was also a distant cousin of the Wright Brothers.

Abstract

This collection consists of scrapbooks, memorabilia, lists of graduates, and reunion materials. Grace A. Greene Normal School first opened in 1869 as Dayton Normal School, and later became Dayton Teacher’s College, before being named Grace A. Greene Normal School. The school gave rudimentary education to women who wished to become teachers in the Dayton area. It closed in 1931, but an active alumnae group continued for many years.
