Scope and Content

This collection features Dayton area church choir records, music and ephemera used by William Alfred Gray and Charlotte Gray during their respective careers as Choir Director and Organist for the Third Street Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio. This collection also contains William Alfred Gray's pamphlets; books used during his employment at Delco and involvement with Local 755 International Union Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers, AFL-CIO-CLC.

Series I: Dayton Area Choirs, is divided into three subseries:

Subseries IA: Third Street Baptist Church, includes church programs, schedules, correspondence, choir attendance records and membership rosters and related choir ephemera from 1962-1967. This subseries includes schedules and music from the choirs' trip to Tar Hollow in 1963. This subseries contains the collectionss only photograph- a gelatin print of a group picture of the choir at Tar Hollow-a church camp located near Chillicothe. Also of interest is the transcript of the choirs' televised performance on "The Church by the Side of the Road".

Subseries IB: St. Luke's Church, includes correspondence from Charles Sorrell of David's United Church of Christ, church programs from St. Luke's and other churches, choir sheet music, choir music schedules, and handwritten notes from 1960-1961.

Subseries IC: Choral Music, includes a collection of choir sheet music, books, catalogues, and song cards. Items of note include The Chapbook, Harold Flammer sample music and American Baptist Assembly Song Cards.

Series II: Delco/ Local 755 International Union Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers, AFL-CIO-CLC, includes Labor Union Agreements and Demand Books, The General Motors-Dayton Division Telephone Directory from 1971 and 1972, General Motors Employee Salaried Benefits and Policies from 1966. In addition the books, The New Industrial State by John K. Galbraith and the Industrial Relations Handbook, 2nd edition are also in this subseries. The union agreement and demand books have been divided into separate folders labeled Part A, B, C, etc. to reduce bulk.

Biography of Charlotte and William Alfred Gray

William Alfred Gray and Charlotte Gray were hired as the Director of Choirs and Church Organist at Third Street Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio in 1962. They were previously employed at St. Luke's Church in Dayton from at least 1960-1962 for the same positions. Charlotte was an active member in the Dayton Music Club and the Dayton chapter of the American Guild of Organists. William was active in the Dayton Choirmasters' Club. William Alfred Gray was employed at GM/Delco Products Division as Supervisor of Labor Relations from about 1946 through 1970.

Abstract

This collection provides documentation about Dayton area choirs and choir music. It contains William Alfred and Charlotte Gray's papers acquired during their careers as choir director and church organist at two Dayton area churches. It also holds documents from and relating to labor agreements between Delco/GM and Local 755 International Union Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers, AFL-CIO-CLC. It also holds employee directories and benefits packages from Delco/GM.
