Biographical / Historical
The Dayton-Wright Company was an integral part of the war effort during World War I, producing and delivering to the front over 3500 airplanes: De Havilland 4s (DH-4s), British bombers to be redesigned for the American Liberty engine (which the company also produced) and 400 J-I trainers designed by the American company Standard Aircraft (Standard SJ-1s).
The pin is believed to be an employee identification badge, as pictures in the Dayton-Wright Airplane Company Photographs (MS-152), all dating to 1918, appear to show employees wearing similar pins/badges.

Custodial History
The item was donated to the Historical Society of Harford County (Maryland) by Patricia Barnes, for the historical society's annual yard sale fundraiser. Ms. Barnes had obtained it from the estate of her sister, who collected antiques and historical items. (The pin is not believed to have originally belonged to anyone in Patricia Barnes' family.) Mary Schweers, administrative assistant for The Historical Society, contacted us to see if we would like to have the item. The museum's director, Maryanna Skowronski, made the decision to donated it to us.
