Biographical / Historical
Frederick L. Haines was born May 17, 1909, in Montgomery County, Ohio, to Joseph A. and Iva (Emerick) Haines. Fred, as he was known, appears to have begun learning to fly in a WACO aircraft in 1932 (per the first log book in this collection), earning his private pilot’s license through instruction and practice based mainly at the East Dayton Airport (near present-day Airway Shopping Center). During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from July 1942 through September 1944, during which time he earned his commercial and instructor ratings. Fred was also involved in test piloting for Aero Products.
In 1934, Fred married Mary Stevens (1908-1975); they do not seem to have had any children. Fred and Mary Haines were lifelong residents of Miamisburg, Ohio. Fred was employed with the Miamisburg Police Department and also operated The House of Magic in Dayton. Fred Haines died on February 9, 1993, at his home in Miamisburg.
