Scope and Contents

The records of this collection are divided into nine series: Constitution, Minutes, Proceedings, Financial Reports, Administrative Functions, General Motors, Chrysler Airtemp, Labor History, and Photographs.

Series I consists of the Constitution and By Laws, 1951 and 1954.

Series II, Minutes, contains the subseries of Executive Board Minutes, 1949-1966, District Council Minutes, 1949-1966, Miscellaneous Conference Board Minutes, 1950-1966, and Civil Rights Committee Minutes, 1954-1957.

Series III is Proceedings the records of the District Council Meetings, 1956-1962.

Series IV contains the Financial Reports from 1947-1974.

Series V is comprised of the Administrative Functions Records. The series is broken down into the subseries of Resolutions and Elections.

Series VI is records concerning General Motors. The series consists of the subseries Negotiations and Benefits, which includes Guaranteed Annual Wage and Supplemental Unemployment Benefits, and negotiations, 1967, 1970, and 1972. The second subseries is General Information from 1934 to 1974.

Series VII is Chrysler Airtemp and it consists of general information from 1964.

Series VIII, Labor History, is union history information including newspaper clippings and pamphlets.

Series IX, Photographs, consists of pictures of the various locals, union officials, union building, summer institute, Ohio Right to Vote Campaign, Scholarship Grant Program, and the 1948 Univis Lens Strike. Box Seven, File One has pictures of James B. Carey with John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Adlai Stevenson. File four has a photograph of David Fitmaurice with Lyndon B.Johnson. File fourteen, Miscellaneous Photographs, has a picture of Harry S Truman and an autographed picture of the ex governor of Ohio, John Gilligan. File nineteen contains a picture of Walter Reuther with John F. Kennedy.

Brief Historical Note

The International Union of Electrical Workers District Council No. 7 (I.U.E. District 7) is headquartered at 3461 Office Park Drive, Dayton, Ohio 45419. The U.E.'s first founding convention was held on March 21 22, 1936. At this time, James B. Carey was unanimously elected President of the U.E. and Julius Emspack, Secretary Treasurer. At the National C.I.O. Convention, November 1949, the U.E. was expelled from the C.I.O. for being "Communist dominated." At this same meeting a successor union with the same jurisdiction was chartered the International Union of Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers (I.U.E.) James B. Carey, C.I.O. secretary and U.E. president voted out of office in 1941, was installed by Murray as head man of the I.U.E.

I.U.E. District Council 7 is one of 11 districts within the I.U.E. It has jurisdiction over 106 local unions in a seven state area Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The records of IUE District Council 7 were accessioned into the Wright State University Archives and Special Collections Department by the Ohio Labor History Project in March of 1981.
