Biographical / Historical
Dayton Cooperative High School started as Dayton Cooperative Industrial High School, the brainchild of a committee of industrialists led by NCR founder John H. Patterson, who approached the school board in 1912 with the idea to combine skilled crafts with secondary education. That led to the Trade Extension in 1913, which became the Dayton Night School. The Dayton Cooperative High School, housed at first in Stivers High School, opened in the fall of 1914. In 1941, the year of this collection, the school was located at East 1st Street on the SW corner of St. Clair.

Processing Information
The photographs were accessioned as a framed photo collage of portraits of the 1941 graduating class of Dayton Cooperative High School. The portraits were individually pasted onto an acidic, extremely brittle board with the name written beneath each photograph. The collage was in a 40”x 60” wood frame, with evidence of past water damage to the backing. The photographs could not be retained in this original format for long term preservation. During processing, the collage was removed from the frame. The majority of photographs exhibited vertical cracks in the emulsion from the tension caused by the acidic glue over time. After removal from the frame, the majority of photos were peeling from the board. These photographs were carefully placed in chemically stable sleeves. The few photographs tightly adhered to the backing were left in place, and the board was cut around the photo and name. These were then placed in sleeves. Originally the photos were not in alphabetical order by name. This was done during processing.
