Carpenter's Miami Valley District Council Records
Scope and Contents
The records within the Carpenter’s Miami Valley District Council (CMVDC) Collection are divided into 6 groupings.
Series 1, Minutes and Bylaws, has the minute books of the District Council for the years 1891 1970 (these are on 2 rolls of microfilm MFM 8); minutes of the Ohio State Carpenter's Apprenticeship Commission,1956 1964; minutes of the Joint Committee, Labor Relations Division, Ohio Contractor's Association and Carpenters Unions,1962; minutes of the Individual Craft Meeting of the carpenters and woodworking trades, 1960; bylaw materials of 2 carpenter locals, 2248 (Dayton) and 2408 (Xenia), 1959 62; and the bylaws of the Carpenter's Miami Valley District Council.
Series II, Board Rulings, contains National Labor Relations Board decisions pertaining to union elections in 3 local lumber companies during the early 1960's and wage stabilization Board rulings from 1950.
Series III, Negotiations and Agreements, has a record of negotiations between CMVDC and Inland Homes of Piqua and Dayton Door and Sash. In addition, this series contains nearly 150 copies of individual agreements between various Miami Valley employers and locals within the District Council. These agreements span the years 1941 1964, and show changes occurring in wages, benefits, hours, and working conditions within the carpenter's trade during this 23 year period. Arrangement of these agreements is chronological.
Series IV, Bulletins and Informational Materials, contains bulletins from various affiliates of the CMVDC, an apprenticeship file describing qualifications, standards and testing material for carpenter's apprentices, information about post-WW II education and reemployment of veterans in the carpenter trades, and a file of administrative orders and informational material pertaining to carpenter-related work on WPA projects in Ohio. Span dates for this series are 1936-1962.
Series V, has general correspondence, a file of correspondence with CMVDC's legal advisor, correspondence with members of Congress, correspondence with local contractors, and correspondence arranged by topic. The material in this series ranges over subjects as jurisdictional disputes, problems with individual union members, legal questions, strikes, negotiations and union organizing. The arrangement is chronological within the folders and span dates are 1956-1965.
Series VI, Financial Records, contain two cash books covering the years 1947-1963.

Historical Note
The Carpenter's Miami Valley District Council was founded in 1891 and serves as an umbrella organization for 5 local unions in the Miami Valley Area. These Locals are 104, 684, and 1807 in Dayton, 2248 in Piqua, and 2408 in Xenia. The offices and meeting hall for the CMVDC are located at 15 Gates Street, Dayton, Ohio.
