Scope and Contents
The material contained in the records of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch #45 is primarily minutes. There are six books of minutes from 1890 to 1948 with minutes from June of 1929 to January of 1932 missing. The first book, 1890-1907, has information on the first meeting, the first annual convention of the National Association of Letter Carriers, and the constitution and by laws that were drawn up by the Branch #45. Within each book, at the front of the book, are "roll call" lists which show the membership for the various years. There are also entries for receipts and expenditures for each particular year. These books contain all the written records of this branch.

Historical Note
The letter carriers of the city of Springfield met on August 3,1890 to establish a permanent organization to be admitted to the National Association of Letter Carriers. Mr. B, F. Seaton was elected President, Ed Corrway was elected Vice President, George Zollinger was elected Secretary and Delegate to the Convention of National Association of Letter Carriers, and L. J. Vester as Treasurer.
On Tuesday, August 12, 1890, at the First Annual Convention of the National Association of Letter Carriers, the Springfield Association was admitted to the National Association to be known as Branch 45 of that Association.
A constitution and by laws drawn up by a committee of Branch 45 was adopted on August 22, 1890, until the time when a constitution and by laws would be furnished by the NALC. The purpose of the organization was to perpetuate fraternal feelings among letter carriers and the advancement of their interests as letter carriers.

The collection consists of the minute books of a Springfield postal workers’ union. The minutes contain membership and financial records.

Custodial History
The records remained for many years in the possession of Mr. Ernest Headley of Springfield, Ohio. After his death they passed to his daughter, and in June of 1978 were placed in the Special Collections and Archives, Wright State University Libraries, by her son in law, Mr. Dale Faugh of Donnelsville, Ohio. Subsequently, they were returned to the union offices in Springfield, Ohio. In 1982, the Ohio Labor History Project re opened contact with the union and on May 20, 1982, they were donated back to the Archives & Special Collections.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The collection was originally donated to Special Collections and Archives, Wright State University Libraries, by Mr. Dale Faugh in June 1978.
