Scope and Contents
The primary content of this collection consists of a photographic scrapbook documenting early aviation. The photographer was George Chapley (1911-1997) of Warren, Ohio. The photographs highlight a number of aviation events between 1925 and 1931, including the crash of the airship Shenandoah and the National Air Races in Cleveland of 1929 and especially 1931. The collection also includes two photographs of Chapley himself, one from approximately the time the scrapbook was created and another depicting Chapley in old age.

Biographical / Historical
George M. Chapley was born October 5, 1911, in Monessen, Pennsylvania, to Teofil and Olga Chapley. The family moved to Warren, Ohio, sometime prior to 1930, where George lived much of his life and worked in a steel mill. George died December 21, 1997, in Warren, Ohio.

Abstract
Photographs in the scrapbook highlight a number of aviation events between 1925 and 1931, including the crash of the airship Shenandoah and the National Air Races in Cleveland of 1929 and, especially, 1931. The photographs were taken by George Chapley, of Warren, Ohio. The collection also includes 2 photographs of Chapley himself.

This collection contains one photographic scrapbook and two photos of its creator.
Custodial History
The scrapbook was provided for sale via the auction house directly from the family of George Chapley. The photographs were sent later by Chapley’s daughter Sarah Jackson.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
This early aviation scrapbook was purchased at auction at the Apple Tree Auction Center, Newark, Ohio, in April 2012. In December 2012, the two photographs of Chapley were donated by Chapley’s daughter Sarah Jackson.
