Scope and Contents

The materials within the International Stereotyper’s and Electrotyper’s Union, Local #114 are divided into four main series: Administrative, Correspondence, Negotiation and Arbitration, and Grievances and Productional Disputes.

Series I, Administrative, includes the minutes of all regular and special union meetings; the records of all the Secretary-Treasurer and the General Fund; and records pertaining to administrative committees and membership affairs. Material in Series I dates from 1927 to 1976.

Series II, Correspondence, is composed of correspondence and various types of trade and union literature. Material in Series II dates from 1944 to 1975.

Series III, Negotiation and Arbitration, includes minutes and materials concerning the Negotiating Committee, as well as records of various arbitration proceedings. Material in Series III dates from 1950 to 1974.

Series IV, Grievances and Disputes, deals primarily with grievance claims and cases against the union, the company, foreman, etc., as well as production disputes, organizational movements, and new processes of production. Material in Series II dates from 1944 to 1974.

Biographical / Historical

The first regular meeting of the newly organized Electrotyper’s Union, no. 114 of Dayton, Ohio was held Thursday evening, March 10th [1927] at 8:15 P.M. in Hotel Gibbons, Room 110.

A merger with the Lithographers and Photoengravers International Union, #15 was proposed in 1966 and finally ratified in 1970. Members of Local #114 worked at McCall’s, NCR, Dayton Electrotype Co., and Matsand Molds, Inc.

Abstract

The collection includes minutes of regular and special meetings, financial records, correspondence, negotiation and arbitration records, agreements, grievances, and union literature. Members of Local 114 worked in Dayton at McCall's, the National Cash Register Company (NCR), Dayton Electrotype, and Matsand Molds, Inc.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was donated to Special Collections and Archives, Wright State University Libraries, by the Ohio Labor History Project, in September 1978.
