Biographical / Historical

The United Way of the Greater Dayton Area (UWGDA) is a charitable organization serving Montgomery, Greene, and Preble Counties in Ohio. It was established shortly after the 1913 flood, a natural disaster that devastated Dayton and much of the surrounding areas. It was known in the early days as the Community Chest. It also had close ties to the Dayton Red Cross for several years, as the two campaigned in a "United Fund" in the mid-20th century.

The UWGDA is a part of the larger United Way Worldwide, which was established in 1887. United Way organizations fundraise through workplace campaigns, where employees donate through payroll deduction to the campaign or fund drive, and then the funds are distributed to various United Way affiliated agencies, many of which focus on health, human services, education, housing, family life, and general welfare.
