Wright State University Student Oral Histories, 2017 (SC-325)

 Collection
Identifier: SC-325

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of short oral history interviews conducted with Wright State University students, primarily graduate students in the Public History concentration, as part of a History 7700: Local History course, taught by Dawne Dewey. These video interviews were conducted in Wright State University’s Dunbar Library on October 25, 2017. Students were asked a series of standard questions, including such topics as: reasons for choosing Wright State University (WSU), description of the student’s first day here, favorite and least favorite thing about WSU, favorite course and favorite professor, and a description of a typical day. All interviews are between 3 and 10 minutes long, with the average being about 4.5 minutes. The total time for all 10 interviews combined is about 62 minutes.

Series I: Preservation Master Files, consists of the original, unedited video footage (MP4, sc325_e0001) and the unredacted release forms (PDF, sc325_e0002). Access to the unredacted release forms (sc325_e0002), which include the students’ contact information, is restricted. All files in this series date to October 2017.

Series II: Access Files, consists of the edited video files (MP4), transcriptions (DOCX and PDF/A), and release forms (PDF/A) with student contact information redacted. Each interview has its own e-item number (sc325_e0003-sc325_e0015), and they are arranged in alphabetical order by interviewee name. The video files in this series differ from those in Series I in that the access video files have been edited to trim irrelevant chatter from the beginning and/or end of the footage, and an informational title (text) slide has been added at the beginning. These video files are of slightly lower quality (and smaller file size) compared to the originals in sc325_e0001 as well. The informational content in this series dates to October 2017 (same as Series I), but the files themselves (revised video, transcriptions, and redacted release forms) were created in 2020 at the time of processing.

Students were asked a standard series of questions on topics such as why they chose Wright State University and what life has been like as a Wright State student. Each interview averages about 4.5 minutes in length.

The collection is arranged into 2 series:

  1. Series I: Preservation Master Files, 2017

Separated Materials

The original paper copies of the release forms are stored in the SC-325 collection file.

Processing Information

The only difference in content between the access copies of the videos and the original footage is that the access copy has been edited to trim irrelevant chatter from the beginning and/or end of the footage, and an informational title (text) slide has been added at the beginning. The original unedited footage for all interviews can be found in sc325_e0001, and these files are of slightly higher video quality than the access copies. Original unedited release forms, including student contact information, are in sc325_e0002, to which access is restricted. The e-items sc325_e0003 through sc325_e0015 contain the access copies of each interview, including the edited (trimmed) video, the transcription (DOCX and PDF/A), and a copy of the release form (PDF/A) with student contact information redacted. All transcriptions were completed by the processor.
