Skardon was a prominent Dayton businessman with an interest in civic and cultural affairs. His papers relate to his service in three organizations: the Metropolitan Church, the Dayton-Montgomery County Bicentennial Committee, and the Dayton Council on World Affairs. The Dayton City Beautiful Council was organized in the mid-1960s as a volunteer adjunct to city government to help make Dayton a more livable, attractive community. Community Research, Inc. was a privately funded think tank formed in 1957 to study and recommend solutions to problems facing metropolitan Dayton. Records include annual reports, Board meeting minutes, and evaluations of community programs. Another series of records focuses on the organization's role in the federal government's Pilot Cities Program in Dayton in the early 1970s and includes Board meeting minutes, correspondence, grant proposals, reports, and evaluations of funded programs.

This chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is named for Jonathon Dayton, the youngest person to sign the U.S. Constitution. The Jonathon Dayton Chapter of the DAR was organized on Feb. 18, 1896 and chartered Apr. 8, 1896. The collection contains scrapbooks outlining the history and activities of the Dayton, Ohio Chapter and includes clippings, photographs, programs, local histories, and genealogies.
