Abstract

The collection consists of approximately 700 collectable trade cards and stamps issued by various industries, primarily the “cigarette cards” of tobacco manufacturers. The majority of the card or stamp series feature airplanes, but some series focus on famous aviators. Materials originate from the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany.

Abstract

Aviation Trail, Inc., began in 1981 as an aviation-themed marketing effort in Dayton, Ohio. Initially including over 30 historical sites in the Miami Valley area relating to aviation history, a small self-guided tour brochure highlighting 16 sites was published. As of 2019, the Trail includes 18 sites.

The collection consists of 20 small photographs of Dayton area events and attractions around the period of 1917-1920, including Hills and Dales Park, Lakeside Park, boats at Coney Island in Cincinnati, balloon launch at Lakeside, Wright plane at Lakeside, and Dayton's World War I Liberty Bond Parade (1918). Some of the photographs are undated. The title of each photo (after the colon) is taken from the caption or label on the photo itself.

Abstract

Ball was a newspaper reporter and editor who specialized in space and aviation. He spent the major portion of his career writing for the Detroit Free Press. Papers include news articles pertaining to various aviation subjects, correspondence, an autographed photograph of Amelia Earhart, and fabric from the wing of the first airplane to complete a trans-continental flight (1911).

His high altitude research included decompression studies and work in an altitude chamber to stratosphere equivalent altitudes.
