Gladys Tressia Turner was born on September 16, 1935 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Education from AM&N College in Pine Bluff in 1957 and a Master of Social Work from the Atlanta University School of Social Work in Atlanta, Georgia in 1959.
