Scope and Contents

The collection contains files (primarily published reports) documenting the Dayton Model Cities Program, which implemented various urban renewal, urban development, and education projects in West Dayton (the Inner West) and later city-wide, during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Biographical / Historical

The "Demonstration Cities" program, popularly known as the "Model Cities" program, was established by the Demonstration Cities and Metropolitan Development Act of 1966, and was a cornerstone of President Lyndon B. Johnson's Great Society and War on Poverty.

Dayton, Ohio, was one of 63 cities nationwide selected for this federal program.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection consists of local government records on deposit from the City of Dayton's Office of Management and Budget. The records were placed in the custody of Wright State University Libraries' Special Collections and Archives in the 1970s. These records remain the property of the City of Dayton and subject to the jurisdiction of the State Archives of Ohio.

The following manuscript collections at Wright State University Libraries may be of interest: Dr. Arthur E. Thomas Collection (MS-667) and Gladys Turner Finney Papers (MS-308). Dr. Thomas, as well as Glady's husband Frederick M. Finney, were involved with the Dayton Model Cities program.
