The Alpha Phi sorority was first created at Syracuse University on October 10, 1872, to provide a "tie which unites, a circle of friends" for women young and old all around the world. The Dayton Alumnae Chapter was officially founded on January 4, 1956. The chapter exists to this day as a form of contact for the alumnae in the Dayton area. Records include yearbooks, meeting minutes, correspondence, financial and membership records, and scrapbooks containing clippings and photographs pertaining to the club's activities. Founded in 1889, the Woman's Literary Club was the first women's club in Dayton. The club's purpose is the study of literature, but it has also engaged in charitable activities. It has also evolved over the years to include creative writing as well as literary study.
