Dayton Community Action Neighborhood Programs Files (LGR-2)

 Record Group
Identifier: LGR-2

Scope and Contents

This collection from the files of the Department of Urban Development, while not a complete record of the Urban Renewal programs or of the East Dayton Community organizations, defines the scope and nature of the neighborhood programs and provides information on the various agencies under this program.

SUBSERIES I: East Dayton Community Council This subseries from the East Dayton Community Council (E.D.D.C.) 1956-1981 mostly concentrates on material from the 1960's. The includes various projects for the East Dayton area such as a Christmas Lighting project, Operation Eyesore Removal, FOCUS (a newsletter on East Dayton activities), and PROFILE (a later newspaper about East Dayton). Other information about E.D.C.C. include: articles of incorporation, a constitution, board lists, meeting announcements, agendas, minutes, membership drives, and various committee activities on planning, rehabilitation, and urban renewal.

SUBSERIES II: Congress of Representatives of East Dayton Organization [CREDO] On April 16, 1970 the Congress of Representatives of East Dayton Organization was incorporated. The funding for this agency ran for one year, although many of the records are for the year prior to and deal with the incorporation process. The records for this agency include its constitution, board minutes, officer list, membership lists and fact sheets. While in effect, CREDO dealt with such topics as the future of the Dayton State Hospital land, various programs in the schools, and housing rehabilitation.

SUBSERIES III: Neighborhood Associations The East Dayton Community Committee was the resource necessary for the development of numerous neighborhood associations starting as early as 1958. Each neighborhood developed its own association for the improvement of the East Dayton area in the areas of housing, schools and neighborhood relationships. The associations formed include: the Belmont Area Civic Council, Bomberger Area Association (with records on the Bomberger Center), East Dayton Businessmen's Association, Burns Jackson Area Cold Oregon), Eastmont, Keowee-Harshman, South Park Area, Walnut Hills, W.S.W.X. The records deal with the associations’ constitutions, by-laws, meeting minutes, membership lists, and proposals. Projects include ice cream socials, area tours, festivals, and area surveys of residents.

SUBSERIES IV: Subject Files This subseries contains files that reflect the relationship of the Department of Urban Development and various other governmental agencies. Included in this subseries are such files as Aid for Aged, American National Red Cross, Appalachian Fund, Church Federation, Dayton Towers, Neighborhood Committee Association. This appears to be an incomplete set of files, stopping at the letter “O”, but does give an example of how this department interacted with other agencies. The years covered are from 1947 to 1980; however, the main concentration is in the 1960's.
