Biographical / Historical
Virginia Steele (1922-2006) was a librarian who responded to the call for volunteers to join the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project in 1964. Because of her training as a librarian, she was assigned the task of organizing “Freedom Libraries” from all of the books sent from northern donors. The books were parceled out to public places where they would be accessible to African Americans, who were not allowed to use public libraries in Mississippi.
