Content Description

The Civil Aviation Medical Association Records span from 1948-2016 (bulk 1955-2008) and include organizational records and information on the organization’s affiliation with the Aerospace Medical Association. Researchers may gain insight through these records on the history of civil aviation medicine, the history of an international organization concerned with civil aviation medicine, relationships between aviation medical congresses, and aviation medical examiners.

Series I, Administration, consists of correspondence, constitution and by-laws, and organizational history of the Civil Aviation Medical Association with materials dated 1948-2014. This series includes the early history of the organization from 1948-1955, when it was known as the Airline Medical Examiners Association.

Series II, Meetings, consists of brochures, awards, photographs, and meeting minutes of annual meetings with materials dated 1948-2010. It includes excerpts from minutes of annual meetings of the Aerospace Medical Association that directly concern the Civil Aviation Medical Association. One item, a letter in the C.D. Henry Memorial Award file, is in Spanish.

Series III, Newsletters, consists of three differently-titled newsletters (1950-2016): News Bulletin, Bulletin, and Flight Physician. News Bulletin covers the period before the name change in 1955 as well as a few years after. The News Bulletin went on to become the Bulletin, which was published until 1997, when the Flight Physician became the newsletter of the Civil Aviation Medical Association. The newsletters from Series III are available online in CORE Scholar, Wright State University’s Campus Online Repository, at: https://corescholar.libraries.wright.edu/special_ms526/.

Biographical / Historical

The Civil Aviation Medical Association (CAMA) is a non-profit International organization that was formerly known as the Airline Medical Examiners Association (AMEA), from 1948-1955. In March 1955, the organization changed its name and widened its membership to include other aeromedical professionals beyond airline medical examiners. Later, CAMA affiliated with the Aeromedical Association that went on to become the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA). The association works with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which approves the Aviation Medical Examiners, who, for instance, examine pilots for readiness for duty, in addition to cooperating on improving aviation industry standards. CAMA – and the AMEA before it – worked with the precursor to the FAA, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) from 1947-1958, when the FAA was established. CAMA is currently headquartered in Peachtree City, Georgia.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was donated to Special Collections and Archives by the Civil Aviation Medical Association with the approval of their vice president, David Millett. A. Duane Catterson, the long-time historian of CAMA, donated the physical files in 2016. Digitized PDF copies of the newsletters and articles were donated by Robin Dodge in 2017.

Existence and Location of Originals

Newsletters may be available in both print and PDF format, depending on the issue. Some issues are only in the collection as PDFs, as the originals were digitized by the donor and then discarded by the donor prior to donation.
