Scope and Contents
The records of the Visiting Nurses’ Association of Dayton, Ohio, date from 1898 through 1970. The collection contains primarily reproductions of the minutes of the Board of Directors from 1911 through 1970. Included also are reports, or copies of reports, semi-annual reports and certain important documents. The first box contains the history of the Fruit and Flower Mission, articles of incorporation and agreements, the constitution and bylaws of the organization. This is followed by the minutes of the Board of Directors and annual reports. Clippings from newspapers and photographs follow.

Biographical / Historical
The Visiting Nurses’ Association began as the Fruit and Flower Mission in 1898 by Emily Stewart. Its original goal was to furnish flowers and fruit to hospital patients and the community’s sick. The mission expanded in 1903 to include a visiting nurse. By 1907, the organization incorporated, and activities were expanded to include a free clinic for children. The Mission changed its name in 1913 to the Visiting Nurses’ Association, which Miss Elizabeth Fox as superintendent of nurses.
The Association expanded its services and staff members. In 1961, the organization was combined with two others, the City of Dayton, Bureau of Nursing, and the Montgomery County Division of Nursing to form the Public Health Nursing Service of Dayton and Montgomery County. In February 1969, the agency was granted full accreditation by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Committee.

Abstract
The records of the Visiting Nurses’ Association of Dayton, Ohio, date from 1898 through 1970. The collection includes materials from the original organization, The Fruit and Flower Mission, as well as the material pertaining to the Visiting Nurses’ Association under the city of Dayton’s Public Health Services. Materials consist of board minutes, correspondence, pamphlets, newspaper clippings and photographs.

General
The majority of the collection is a reproduction of original material. The originals are located in Boston University’s Mugar Memorial Library. The reason for this is two-fold. First, the material suffers from deterioration, making reproduction necessary. Second, the Mugar Library is the archival center for nursing history.
