Scope and Contents
The records of Teamsters Local 654 are divided into five series: Administrative Records, General Correspondence, Materials from Affiliated Organizations, Bulletins from the Ohio Conference of teamsters (Legal, Research, and Statistical Division), and a Miscellaneous series.
Administrative Records (Series I) contains the minutes of regular and special board meetings dating from January, 1937 to December, 1947. A gap exists between April, 1939 and December, 1941. There is also a file of undated miscellaneous minutes. The Statements of Charges file contains short, handwritten charges of union violations directed against members.
Correspondence in Series II is of a very general nature and dates from 1937 to 1938.
Series III contains materials from Joint Council #61, a coalition of Western Ohio and Eastern Indiana Teamsters Locals. Minutes of regular and executive board meetings between 1940 and 1948 are included, as is a set of undated dues records.
Series IV contains Bulletins from the Ohio Conference of Teamsters (Legal, Research, and Statistical Division). There is one Bulletin from 1950 and a nearly complete set of 1951 Bulletins. They deal mainly with collective bargaining wage settlements.
The Miscellaneous series (Series V) contains four folders holding five miscellaneous items from 1937, 1938, and 1942.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters was created in 1903 with help from the American Federation of Labor (AFL). The early teamster union supported men who drove horse-drawn wagons. Later the brotherhood grew to include the men operating motor vehicles. The Local 654 was affiliated with other regional unions to create the Joint Council #61. The coalition consisting of Western Ohio and Eastern Indiana teamster unions. As of 2018, Local 654 is no longer in existence. There is still a Dayton, Ohio Local under the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 957.
