Historical Note
The Chaplain William Earnshaw Camp 89, Sons of Veterans U.S.A. (S.V.) served Dayton, Ohio. The post was named in honor of Reverend Earnshaw, first chaplain of the Soldiers Home in Dayton.
The Sons of Veterans was an auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic. The first “camp” appeared at Philadelphia in 1878 but a national organization was not formed until 1881. Camp 89 was affiliated with G.A.R. Post 23 which had been organized September 29, 1880. Earnshaw Camp’s aims were parallel to those of the G.A.R., but membership descended from father to son. One of the organization’s required activities involved regular military drill practices which were held at the Old Guard Hall in Dayton. The Earnshaw Camp was a drum corps.
