History of Springfield Urban League

The Springfield Urban League, Inc. began in April of 1962 as a result of studies by Dr. Warner Banner. Dr. Banner found that living conditions for blacks in Springfield were much lower than whites.

The purpose of the Urban League as stated in its constitution was to "improve the industrial, economic, social, educational, recreational, cultural, and spiritual conditions among Negroes and other groups seeking the services of the League." It was to operate under social work standards as an interracial and educational service agency.

The League kept standing committees to deal with such subjects as job development, employment, education, health, and housing. Anyone in the community interested in these areas could join the Urban League with the approval of the Membership Committee.

As a branch of the Urban League the Urban League Guild of Springfield developed in 1964. According to its constitution, the Guild was organized in order to "bring together women interested in building a better community through promotion of inter-'cultural and inter-group activities; and to serve as a concrete demonstration of the objectives of the Urban League movement, both locally and nationally."
