Society of NASA Flight Surgeons Records (FSC-46)
Scope and Contents
Series I: Foundational Documents, includes both the by-laws and constitution of the organization. All of the individual pages are typed front to back. There are at least two copies of each.
Series II: Presidential Files, includes files from that particular president's term, such as emails that have been printed out or letters that have been copied. There are some instances of handwritten documents as well. Each year has a copy of the review of the designated year’s annual meeting. There are other various types of documents, although much less prevalent, that appear in these folders and are designated largely by the year they were created. A new president was chosen on a yearly basis as part of the proceedings of the organization’s annual meeting which was routinely held in May. Each file contains documents dated from the May of the first year to the May of the second.
Series III: Website Prints, contains a full print of several iterations of the organization's website. There are four versions included and each is labeled on the homepage with its number and publishing date.
Series IV: Annual Meeting Programs, includes a wide range of programs from the annual meetings of the organization. Each is a simple folded booklet made of a single leaf of paper.
Series V: Member Documents, is separated into three major groups. The first is membership applications and includes the CVs/resumes of various prospective members. Many of these also include brief correspondence between these members and ranking officials in the organization. Additionally, some have photos of said members attached. This section also holds copies of the original designs for the numerous awards distributed by the organization. There are also photocopies of various individuals participating in events held by the organization in this folder although who is pictured and in what context is missing from all of them. The second is composed of a thin, bound ledger that details the years in which many of the members joined. These instances are marked by the individual’s name and the year they were accepted into the organization. It also details some of the financial transactions of the organization including what was being purchased and how much. Finally, a single copy of the award notice for the year 1996 is included in this series.
Series VI: Lovelace Foundation, represents a time when the Society of NASA Flight Surgeons had aligned itself with the Lovelace Foundation, another medical organization dedicated to advancement in the field. This series largely includes various types of correspondence between leading members of both organizations. They come in the form of printed emails and some handwritten correspondence. It also includes a VHS tape that holds a recording of Stanley White’s acceptance of the Lovelace award. There is a printed news article discussing several figures within the organization including the individual depicted in the tape. A handwritten note between this individual and another is also included in the folder.

Biographical / Historical
The Society of NASA Flight Surgeons (SNFS) is a constituent of the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA). It was founded in May 1978 during that year's annual AsMA meeting. The idea was initially conceived by Dr. Arnauld Nicogossian. The other three founding members were Drs. Paul Buchanan, G. Wyckliffe Hoffler, and Rufus R. Hessberg. The goal of AsMA, itself founded in 1929 By dr. Louis H. Bauer, is to further the application and advancement of knowledge used to prompt and enhance the health, safety, and performance of individuals involved at all levels of aerospace activities. Considering that the SNFS is a branch of this organization their goals are exceedingly similar, largely differing in the fact that the SNFS chooses to place a greater emphasis on Medicine outside of the atmosphere.

Accruals
No further accruals are anticipated.
Existence and Location of Originals
Regarding the web site printouts: original website depicted in the “Website Prints” folder no longer exists on the Internet.
General
The Society of NASA Flight Surgeons no longer curates their own website. However, there is a Facebook page still in existence (https://www.facebook.com/SocietyNFS) and a small overview page as part of the Aerospace Medical Association’s website (https://www.asma.org/about-asma/constituents/society-of-nasa-flight-surgeons).
Processing Information
There were some slight changes to the original arrangement of the collection instituted to make the information flow better. These included separating some sections that were easily distinct from each other such as the “Foundational Documents” and the various award templates. Additionally, some materials were combined such as the printed photocopies of some of the organization's members and the membership applications to reduce the number of folders within the arrangement. While there is some material relating to the Lovelace Foundation in this collection, some part of it directly relates to the SNFS. Some Lovelace material was removed and will be added to the Lovelace Foundation collection.
