Scope and Contents

This collection contains a set of twenty photographic postcards depicting Juan Biélovucic's flights in Peru, around 1910. The photographs include images of his plane on the ground and in flight, as well as images of the San Beatriz Racetrack in Lima, Peru. The postcards are not identified individually.

Biographical / Historical

Juan Biélovucic Cavalier was born in Lima, Peru, in 1889. He learned to fly in France on Voisin airplanes and returned to his native country to be the first pilot to fly a heavier-than-air craft in Peru. He made his flight in a 50-horsepower Voisin-type airplane on January 15, 1911. He flew from Lima to nearby Callao at a height of 200 feet. He flew again on January 23 over Lima, above the adoration of crowds.
