Biographical / Historical

William Delos McCarthy (1886-1968) was born in Wellston, Ohio, and his wife Lucile Deda Parker (1887-1977) was born in Michigan, where they were married in 1909. The couple lived in Dayton, Ohio, from about the time of their marriage until about 1912. By 1916, the family was living in Toledo, where they still lived in 1920. William's occupation was in printing and publishing.

William and Lucile had two daughters: Frances Evans McCarthy (1911-1980) and Luella Amy McCarthy (born 1916-1986).

The album which is the subject of this collection documents the family's journey by car from Dayton, Ohio, to California, where they appear to have set up permanent residence at the end of the trip. It is unclear whose home was at 151 Indiana Avenue in Dayton (pictured in the album). A photo of the "old Evans house" in Wellston is probably a reference to William's family; his mother was an Evans. It would seem that the family may have been traveling around Ohio at the beginning of their journey visiting family and friends around the state before permanently removing to the west coast.

The final photograph in the album depicts "our present home - 439 W. Doran St., Glendale, Calif." Glendale is a northern suburb of Los Angeles. By 1930, the family had moved to Oakland, California, and remained in the San Francisco Bay area for many years. William, Lucile, and Frances (married name Cole) all died in Alameda; Luella (married name Bauer) died in Tuolumne.
