Biographical / Historical

Elder-Beerman Company was formed in 1962 when Dayton businessman Arthur Beerman merged his Beerman department store company (founded in 1950) with Dayton's Elder & Johnston department store company. The Elder-Beerman Company then opened several department stores throughout the region.

This collection relates specifically to the Elder-Beerman Store that was located at the Dayton Mall in Miami Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. In the spring of 1998, the McAlpin's store in the Dayton Mall sold their anchor store location to Elder-Beerman. The space was quite a bit larger than an existing nearby Elder-Beerman Store at the Southtowne Shopping Center, so that store closed, and all Southtowne Elder-Beerman employees were moved to the new Dayton Mall location, which opened in July 1998.

In 2003, the Elder-Beerman Company was acquired by Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. The Dayton Mall Elder-Beerman Store closed in August 2018, shortly after Bon-Ton filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
