DW Image # 207: RB-1, Dayton Wright Special Racer (Neg #212), circa 1920
Scope and Contents
Dayton-Wright RB-1 at the Dayton-Wright Airplane Company. The photographic image is of the Dayton-Wright RB-1 in an open field at the Dayton-Wright Airplane Company, circa 1920. The Dayton-Wright RB-1 was also known as the Dayton-Wright Racer. The aircraft was designed to race in the 1920 Gordon Bennet Aviation Cup Race. The RB-1 had the first successful retractable landing gear and had solid wings. The aircraft had limited forward vision but very good side and downward vision because of the windows on the side. The RB-1 did compete in the race but could not finish due to mechanical problems with the camber change gear.
