Kennedy, John F., Visit to Dayton, Ohio, Area (Oversize) , 1960 Oct. 16-17

The John F. Kennedy VIP File includes black and white photographs from several visits by President Kennedy to Ohio and Indiana, as well as Kennedy's 1961 inauguration.

There are visits to Dayton, Vandalia, Springfield, Miamisburg, West Carrollton, Middletown, Columbus, and Cincinnati, Ohio, as well as Richmond, Indiana.

Notable individuals photographed with President Kennedy include: R. William Patterson, Dayton mayor; James M. Cox, Jr.; Dan Mahoney; Michael DiSalle, Ohio governor; Margaret Price, National "Kennedy for President" Vice President; Brooks Lawrence, former Cincinnati Reds pitcher and Springfield resident; Albert Horstman; Ohio Senator Stephen M. Young.

The most voluminous content is for a campaign visit that then-Senator Kennedy made to Dayton and other Miami Valley cities (Vandalia, Dayton, Springfield, West Carrollton, Miamisburg, and Middletown) in October 1960, including several oversize shots of Kennedy's speaking appearance to a large crowd at Dayton's Courthouse Square.

Of particular note are original photographs of Kennedy's 1961 inauguration, which was attended and captured by Dayton Journal Herald photographer Bob Doty. This oversize file contains prints from the inauguration ceremony itself, including one of Kennedy taking the oath of office, while Mrs. Jackie Kennedy, incoming Vice President Lyndon Johnson, and outgoing President Eisenhower and Vice President Nixon look on. This file is the only one that includes any images of Mrs. Kennedy.

The sub-series also includes one file of photographs depicting artworks and exhibits memorializing Kennedy following his assassination.
