Johnson, Lyndon B., Visit to Dayton, Ohio, 1964 Oct. 16-17
Scope and Contents
The Lyndon B. Johnson VIP File includes black and white photographs from visits by President Johnson and wife Lady Bird Johnson to Ohio, including Dayton, Cincinnati, and Athens.
Notable individuals photographed with President Johnson include: James A. Rhodes, Ohio governor; Dr. Vernon Alden, Ohio University president; and Jerry A. Graham, Kettering resident and Congressional candidate. (Other notables are certainly present in the photos but are not readily identified.)
The most voluminous files in this sub-series are those for Johnson's visits to Dayton in October 1964 and September 1966. Both have many photos, including many oversize (11x14) photos. The October 1964 campaign visit included a speech to a large crowd at Dayton's Old Courthouse, with many attendees holding signs supporting Johnson and stating that Dayton is "not Goldwater country" (referencing Republican nominee Barry Goldwater). The September 1966 visit included a parade, a speech at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds grand stand, and attendees holding signs with sentiments of either support for Johnson or denouncing the Vietnam War.
