Scope and Content

The Springfield Urban League collection covers the period of 1953, its inception, through 1970. It includes the local administrative records and correspondence as well as information from the National Urban League, with some references to the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1968.

Series 1: Contains the administrative records, Constitution and By-'Laws, records of annual meetings, and general correspondence, including mention of the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., and some newspaper clippings of the Youth Community.

Series 2: Contains records of the following committees: Educational and Youth Incentive; Executive Committee; Health and Welfare Committee; Housing Committee: Human Relations; Job Development and Employment Committee; Membership Committee; Nomination Committee; Personnel Committee; and Youth Community Committee.

Series 3: Contains records of the Urban League Guild.

Series 4: Contains various projects of the Springfield Urban League, including Proiect ENABLE (Education and Neighborhood Action for Better Living Environment); Leadership Development Project, and New Thrust Program.

Series 5: Contains records about the League's involvement in Education (includes an incident at North High School in 1968 concerning election of both white and black homecoming queens); some records on Religion, and Housing.

Series 6: Contains records concerning Race Relations, including position on legislative bills and copies of speeches made before committees at both state and federal levels, and information on Civil Rights.

Series 7: Contains records concerning aspects of Employment, such as the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services; the Springfield Plan (a program to use black student employees); the Job Corps; and the Small Business Administration. This series also contains a file on Voting and a miscellaneous file.
