History of Strayer Company

The W. M. Strayer Company was founded in 1869 by William M. Strayer. According to one of the ledgers, the store sold; “Staple and fancy dry goods, cloths, cassimeres, books, shoes, and ladies furnishing goods and notions of all kinds”. The company also operated a tannery.

William Monroe Strayer, the founder of the store, was born in 1831 to Daniel and Elizabeth (Small) Strayer. He married Mary Jane Henderson in 1854, and they had several children: Emma, Charles, Alice, Sue, and Daniel. William served 5 months with the 132nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company F, from May to September 1864. He died February 11, 1884. His wife and children continued to operate the store in De Graff through the early 1900s.
