Biography

William Monroe Strayer, the founder of the W.M. Strayer Company, was born in 1831 to Daniel and Elizabeth (Small) Strayer. He married Mary Jane Henderson in 1854, and they had several children: Emma, Charles, Alice, Sue, and Daniel. William served 5 months with the 132nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company F, from May to September 1864. He died February 11, 1884. His wife and children continued to operate the store in De Graff through the early 1900s.
