As a member of the Ohio Network of American History Research Centers, Wright State is the official repository and archives for local government records for 11 counties in central southwestern Ohio: Auglaize, Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, and Shelby Counties.

The volume and type of local government records held vary by county. Records include county auditor, board of education, children's home, clerk of courts, county home or infirmary, probate court, sheriff, township, and town/city records.

Special Collections include manuscript materials related to aviation history and local history.

Special Collections and Archives collects manuscript material on aviation history, with a natural emphasis on the lives and work of Wilbur and Orville Wright, the inventors of powered flight. Wright State University, named for these two Dayton natives, serves as a research center for the Wrights' life and work. Special Collections and Archives also serves as a research center for the history of aviation and aviation technology in general, with particular geographic emphasis on aviation innovation and history in Ohio and the Miami Valley, home of the Wright Brothers.

Special Collections and Archives also collects manuscript materials relating to local history in the following counties: Auglaize, Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, and Shelby Counties. Types of manuscript materials collected may include: individual and family papers; business, labor union, and transportation records; papers of civic, cultural, and fraternal organizations, churches, women's organizations, political figures, ethnic groups settling in the Miami Valley, and local medical history.

The University Archives preserves the institutional memory of Wright State through the collection of official university records and related materials. The collections are rich sources of information regarding academics, administrative concerns, student life, and the development of the university. Materials include the university presidents’ papers, course catalogs, yearbooks, music recitals, theatre programs, The Guardian and other publications, and the University Historical and Photograph Collection.

Permanently valuable university records may be stored in the University Archives. Storage space is reserved for records of historic interest or with an enduring research value. Examples include: departmental publications and reports; administrative and academic committee records; historical files documenting development of departments or offices; student and faculty organization files; institutional budget materials; student publications; photographs, slides; memorabilia; and other ephemera.
