 Collection
Identifier: MS-6

Scope and Contents

Series I, Documents, consists of original printed and handwritten items that were previously tucked inside the scrapbook. Materials include business letters, circulars, stockholder notices, and pamphlets, dating from 1849 to 1862, and one report from 1909. The circulars range from the very first information concerning the breaking of ground for the railroad to other stockholder news. Also contained in this series is an original first passage ticket for the railroad dating to 1851.

Series II, Scrapbook, consists of a scrapbook containing mainly newspaper clippings, dating from 1840 to 1877. Most, but not all, of the clippings concern the Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad. Many articles concern special events and excitement in the Cincinnati area during the time period.

Series III, American Railroad Journal Clippings, contains photocopies of articles published in the American Railroad Journal, between 1847 and 1855, dealing with other railroads, including the Bellefontaine and Indiana, Columbus, Piqua, Indiana, Cincinnati Dayton, Columbus Xenia, Dayton Michigan, Dayton Western, Greenville, and Springfield Rail companies in the Miami Valley area. This material is to supplement the original source documents of the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad Records.

History of Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad Company

The Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad began construction in the Miami Valley in 1846. The railroad was originally constructed to connect Cincinnati and Hamilton, Ohio but was soon stretched onward to Dayton. By the end of the nineteenth-century the company controlled over 640 miles of track. In 1917 the railroad was acquired by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

The compiler of the collection, Stephen Satterly L’Hommedieu (1806-1875) was a proprietor of the Cincinnati Gazette newspaper, and after retiring from that industry was elected the second president of the Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad in 1848. L’Hommedieu also was a delegate from the First District of Ohio to the first Whig party convention in 1848.
