Abstract

The collection pertains mainly to James E. P. Sullivan’s work as a designer at United Aircraft Products in Dayton, Ohio, during World War II, including such materials as company history, product literature, newsletters, and many parts drawings and designs. The collection also includes some material on the development of the Douglas A-26 Invader aircraft, a project for which James Sullivan’s father was chief engineer. A few photographs of people and aircraft are included also.

Harry A. Toulmin's Wright Company Patent Litigation Volumes (MS-641)

Abstract

The collection consists of nine bound volumes of patent litigation records for the lawsuits that the Wright Company brought against the Herring-Curtiss Company and Glenn H. Curtiss, Louis Paulhan, and Claude Grahame-White. These are the personal copies of the Wrights’ lawyer, Harry A. Toulmin, and the books contain many handwritten notes.

Abstract Sir Frank Whittle invented the jet propulsion engine, proposing the use of the gas turbine for jet propulsion in 1928. He patented his idea in 1930. The first jet aircraft flew in 1941. Whittle's engine technology was shared with the United States government and became the foundation for the American jet aircraft program. This scrapbook contains news clippings of aircraft and aviation events around the Miami Valley and the nation in the World War II era. Many of the clippings come from Dayton’s newspapers at the time, the Journal, the Herald, and the Daily News. Some clippings were taken from magazines. The creator of the scrapbook is unknown.
