Scope and Contents

Series I: The Dayton and Miami Valley Oral History Project, includes interviews from the Dayton and Miami Valley Oral History Project, including interviews, release forms from the participants allowing access to and use of the materials, as well as the actual interview reordings on audiocassette, CD, DVD, and/or VHS. Materials in this series date between 1997 and 2013.

Series II: Making Progress: Living and Working in Ohio’s Miami Valley, 1890-1929, contains recordings of NEH planning sessions, grant writing materials, community outreach planning documents, exhibition materials, and teaching and instructional materials produced by the project. Materials in this series date from 2001 to 2004 as well as 2009.

Conditions Governing Access

There are no donor-imposed restrictions on accessing material in this collection; however, the following access restrictions are in place for the preservation of analog AV materials and electronic records:

Due to preservation concerns, original audio and video materials cannot be played in the reading room. Patrons may have access to digitized reference copies. Items without existing reference copies can be digitized at the patron’s request for the cost of creating a digital copy. Please contact us at least two (2) weeks in advance if you would like to request an audio or video reference copy. Access to electronic records (indicated by an e-number, e.g., ua16_e0001) in this collection is restricted until they are fully processed. Requests for unprocessed electronic records can be submitted for consideration by contacting us at least two (2) weeks in advance. Archives staff reserve the right to restrict access to files with privacy or confidentiality concerns or to deny requests in which the review period is insufficient, given the volume of records requested and the desired access date. Access to original electronic media is restricted.

Biographical / Historical

The Marjorie McLellan Miami Valley History Collection is a collection of materials related to two projects directed by Dr. Marjorie McLellan during her tenure as Associate Professor in the Department of History and the Department of Urban Affairs and Geography at Wright State University.

The Dayton and Miami Valley Oral History Project is a collection of student projects completed under the direction of Dr. McLellan to document and preserve different aspects of Miami Valley history through oral history interviews.

“Making Progress: Living and Working in Ohio’s Miami Valley, 1890-1929”, is a component of the larger Miami Valley Teaching American History Project, an NEH grant funded project to provide summer institutes on different aspects of American History for Miami Valley educators of grades 5, 8, 9, 10, and 12. “Making Progress” is part 1 of the training series, with the goal of providing instruction and analysis of the meaning of “progress” in regional and national history, as well as providing lesson materials on the Progressive Era in Dayton for classroom use by area educators.

Abstract

This collection contains materials related to two local history projects developed by Dr. Marjorie McLellan, retired faculty member of the Wright State University College of Liberal Arts. Projects represented in the collection include the Dayton and Miami Valley Oral History Project, and “Making Progress: Living and Working in Ohio’s Miami Valley, 1890-1929”. Materials include oral history recordings and transcriptions; meeting recordings and planning documents; exhibition and instructional materials; and other related administrative documentation.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into 2 series:

  1. Series I: Dayton and Miami Valley Oral History Project, 1997-2013
  2. Series II: Making Progress: Living and Working in Ohio’s Miami Valley (1890-1929), 2001-2004, 2009

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

The collection contains some materials in special formats including audio cassettes, CD-R, DVR, and VHS which require special media equipment in order to view them. We request that you contact Special Collections & Archives in advance of your research to view these materials.

Electronic files require the use of appropriate computer hardware and software. File formats in this collection include JPG, TIF, PDF, PPT, DOC, and others.

Marjorie McLellan transferred the collection to Special Collections & Archives on April 22, 2019.
