Dr. Benjamin R. McClellan Collection
Scope and Contents
Dr. Benjamin R. McClellan was a long-time physician in Xenia, Ohio. He was active in a number a variety of medical activities in Greene County. Included in his collection is a booklet outlining the principles of medical ethics of the American Medical Association. This booklet also contains the Constitution and By-Laws, Membership, and Fee-Bill for the Greene County Medical Society. There is also a chart for the “Diagnosis and Treatment of Nervous and Mental Disorders,” which was developed by Dr. H. H. McClellan in 1928. However, the bulk of the collection contains non-medical material. Included in this material are mortgage deeds and deeds of sale for land in Greene County, Ohio primarily purchased by John Ginn. Of interest for some researchers is a letter to James Miller from John Wallace concerning his journey from Xenia through Zanesville and Steubenville to Pittsburgh, PA in December 1807. Finally, there are several copies of the original roll of Company E, 153rd OVI.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Benjamin Rush McClellan was born February 20, 1860 in Xenia, Ohio. He graduated from Wooster College in 1881 and from Miami Medical College in 1884. He married Tone Reyburn that same year and had five children. He was president of McClellan Hospital from its establishment in 1898 until 1934 when his son, Schuyler, became administrator. He was an active member of the American Medical Association and past president of the following: Ohio State Medical Board (1921), Greene County Medical Society (1925), Greene County Historical Museum, and Ohio Soldiers and Sailors Orphans (O.S. & S. O.) Home hospital staff. He served in the Medical Reserve Corps during WWI (1916-1918) and was chief of Surgical Staff at the U.S. Army Debarkation Hospital No. 2 in New York City. He died June 1943, in Williamsburg, Va. of a heart attack.
