Scope and Content

Included in the collection is a stereoviewer and 90 accompanying glass plate stereoscopic photographs of war scenes from World War I. The slides measure 4.25" x 1.25".Stereoscopic photographs are double pictures of the same scene, side by side, which produces a 3 dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoviewer.

The slides are arranged as they were received. Descriptions on each slide are handwritten in French and appear in the inventory.

Biography of Hugh O. Merron

The glass plate stereoview slides and viewer were purchased by Hugh O. Merron in Paris, France. Merron served in the American Expeditionary Forces stationed in France during World War I. He was in the Foot Bound Infantry. Merron was born in Syracuse, New York on February 12, 1894. He and his wife, Berdella, did not have children. In the 1930 census, Merron was living in Detroit, Michigan, and was the owner of a grocery store. Merron was a member of the Masonic Order in Detroit, Michigan. He died on Feb. 1, 1966.

Abstract

A set of 90 glass plate stereoview images depicting scenes from World War I. The images are accompanied by handwritten descriptions in French. The collection was owned by Hugh O. Merron, a World War I veteran. Also included is a stereoviewer made in Paris, France.

The plates are arranged in the order they were received.

Technical Requirements

To see the images in 3-D as intended, the stereo viewer in the collection is needed. For research purposes, this is not recommended due to the extra handling it requires of the fragile images. The images themselves may be viewed on a light box.

The collection was donated by Catherine Hofstetter Winkler in July, 2012.

To locate a specific image on CORE Scholar, search for the item identifier using the following format: MS457_01_SS, where SS is the two-digit slide number. For instance, to locate the first item, search for MS457_01_01.

Processing Information

Due to flaking emulsion on the glass plates, some of the descriptions are illegible, which is noted in the inventory. Three of the glass plates are broken and at the end of the inventory.
