History of Miami Valley Personnel and Guidance Association
In the early 1960s, a group of school counselors from Montgomery County met on occasion to share information from the State Department of Education relevant to counseling. Several counselors wanted to expand and provide an opportunity for all counselors to share professional information. As a result, the Miami Valley Personnel and Guidance Association (MVPGA) was founded in 1967. Julia Tieman, a school counselor, served as the first President. Anyone interested in advancing the discipline of counseling and human development was invited to join. The group was a chapter within the Ohio Personnel and Guidance Association.
Programming consisted of dinner meetings with speakers, social hours and a lively newsletter. This group also provided networking opportunities for counselors. They also supported legislation promoting their profession on the state and national level. They achieved the 1979-1980 Outstanding Chapter Award from the Ohio Personnel and Guidance Association.
When the American Personnel and Guidance Association changed its name, so did state and local groups. MVPGA became Miami Valley Association for Counseling and Development, and subsequently the Miami Valley Counseling Association.
