Galloway Family Papers (MFM-7)

The records, letters, and other papers of the "Galloway Collection" are from the personal library of William A. Galloway M.D., a practicing physician in Xenia for over 40 years. Dr. Galloway was born April 8, 1860 near Xenia and spent his boyhood on his father's farm. In 1890 he began the practice of medicine with his older brother, Clark M. Galloway. After his brother's death in 1913 he maintained his practice at his office on W. Main St. between King and Galloway Streets until his death in 1931. Dr. Galloway was a historian as well as a physician and was president of the Greene County Historical Society which he had organized in 1928 at the time of the Greene County Homecoming. Folowing his interest in history and also his own family's history he wrote the book "Old Chillicothe" which was published posthumously in 1934. Much of the material contained in this collection consists of letters and notes acquired during the time of his preparation for the publishing of the book. Other subjects covered pertain to his many interests in the county, the state, his family and many, many various items. As Dr. Galloway was involved in various aspects of community life both professionally and personally he was able to acquire many items of historical value. He was physician of O.S. & S.O. Home, railroad surgeon, on the Board of Trustees of Wilberforce University and Galloway Hall was named for him. The Galloway family was one of the first families to settle in Greene County. James Galloway, Sr. and family moved into the county in 1797 and it was his daughter, Rebecca who Tecumseh, great chief of the Shawnees had wished to marry. Later she married her cousin, George Galloway and William A. Galloway was their grandson. Thus it seemed he was destined to become a person interested in Indian history as well as that of the white man.
