Scope and Contents

The Collection includes miscellaneous Union and Democratic election tickets from the election of 1863. Some of the tickets have writings on them.

There is also a ribbon in the collection from the 54th reunion of the 94th O.V.I. First Brigade, First Division, 14th Army Corp. It shows the battles and engagements during the civil war that they were involved in along with location and date. It is dated August 6, 1925.

Biographical / Historical

John Brough was born on September 17, 1811. By the age of 20 he purchased the Washington County Republican a newspaper and sold it in 1833. From 1835 to 1837 he served as clerk for the Ohio Senate and a year later in 1838 he successfully ran as representative for Fairfield and Hocking Counties. John’s love of the newspaper world continued when together with his brother they bought the Cincinnati Advertiser renamed it the Cincinnati Enquirer which was one of the most influential Democratic newspaper before the civil war. In 1863 he ran for governor of Ohio and won but was a highly contested victory. John served from July 11, 1864 to August 29, 1865 in which he died from gangrene from a sprained ankle which had gotten infected.
