Biographical / Historical

Herbert Wright was born February 7, 1893, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Reuchlin and Lulu Wright. Reuchlin was the oldest brother of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Herbert graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, as well as Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas (Class of 1916).

Herbert was a musician and worked for the Jenkins Music Company beginning shortly after his graduation from Baker University. According to his World War I draft registration in April 1917, he was already working for Jenkins Music Company while living in Kansas City, Kansas.

Herbert married Irene May (1895-1931) on October 21, 1917, in Independence, Missouri.

Herbert entered the Army by draft on August 19, 1918. He served overseas with the 104th Field Hospital in France. He arrived back in the United States on April 18, 1919.

When Jenkins Music opened a store in Wichita, Kansas, in 1922, Herbert and his family moved there. He retired from Jenkins in 1951, and he moved from Wichita to California in 1952.

Herbert and Irene had two children: Wilbur Herbert Wright (1920-1991) and Katharine Wright Chaffee (1922-2007). After his first wife died in a car accident in 1931, Herbert later married Edna (Tischhauser) Loevenguth (1895-1982), a widow with 4 children, on June 26, 1933.

Herbert Wright died on June 19, 1960, at his home in Riverside, California.
