Biographical / Historical

Mary Catherine (Rindler) Plassenthal was born in 1923 in Mercer County, Ohio. Home was a farm just north of North Star, Ohio, which happens to be in Darke County. Her parents were Joseph J. Rindler and his wife Loretta C. (Dillhoff). Mary Catherine was the third of fifteen children, four of whom died as infants.

She graduated from Versailles High School and then moved to Dayton to attend nursing school at Good Samaritan School of Nursing, graduating in 1945.

In August of 1948, she married Victor Robert Plassenthal of Dayton. He was born in 1920 in Dayton to Frank L. Plassenthal and his wife Catherine E. (Seitz). Victor was one of eight children raised in North Dayton on Baltimore Street. He attended Chaminade High School and was nominated for the Daily News Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame for his pitching ability with the Class “C” baseball league while playing for Reynolds and Reynolds Company team, Reynocos.

Vic and Mary Kay (as they were known) originally had a home on Kiefaber Street but just before their birth of their daughter Janis in 1955, they purchased a home on Hillcrest Avenue just a half block from Main Street. The family was active in the parish of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and all five of their children attended elementary school grades 1-8 at the parish school.

Vic served in the Army Air Corps as a Tech Sergeant and Crew Chief responsible for repairing the Lockheed P-38 aircraft during World War II while stationed with the 434 Fighter Squadron. After the war he was employed on one of the assembly lines at National Cash Register in Dayton.

Vic died on February 14, 2002, and Mary Kay passed away July 27, 2010, both in Dayton. They are buried in Calvary Cemetery, Dayton.
