Scope and Content
The Richard D. Fullerton/Jane Reece Collection is an excellent chronology of a unique Dayton building. Constructed as a fire station in 1889, 834 Riverside Terrace has been adapted to a variety of uses, standing vacant for only one year out of 100.
The collection also provides information on the life and work of photographer Jane Reece (ca. 1869-1961). An associate of Alfred Stieglitz and the Photo-Secessionists, Reece, specialized in portrait and artistic photography, earning awards in national and international competitions from 1906-1935. Reece purchased 834 Riverside Terrace in 1924 and used it as a home, studio, and gallery until her death.
Series I consists of a chronology of 834 Riverside Terrace, along with photographs of Dayton Fire Department Company Number 9. This series also includes plat maps of Dayton view and information about the Schantz Brewery which occupied a neighboring lot.
Series II documents the 1924 remodeling of 834 Riverside Terrace through original photographs by Jane Reece. The photographs, many of which are labeled, are in two sizes, 3 ¼" x 4 ¼" snapshots and 8" x 10" enlargements of the snapshots.
The years between 1924 and 1961 are covered in Series III, which consists of photographs of Jane Reece in her studio and exterior views of the studio.
Reece was honored for her work in photography in many ways during her life and after her death. Materials concerning these tributes are contained in Series IV.
Series V consists of examples of Reece's artistic photography, information about exhibitions of Reece's work, and a copy of a two-volume thesis on Reece's artistic photography.
