Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The records within the IUE Local #755 collection are divided into eight series. Series I, Administrative Bodies, is further divided into eight subseries depending upon origin of the records. Subseries 1 contains the Minutes of the Regular Membership Meetings, 1938-1970. The minutes of the Executive Board of Local #755 are found in Subseries 2, 1938-1970. Subseries 3 contains the minutes of the Shop Committee, 1942-1964. Subseries 4 is composed of the Shop Steward's Council Minutes, 1947-1974. Subseries 5 contains the minutes of the IUE GM Conference Board, 1950-1959, and Subseries 6 is composed of various materials from IUE conventions including proceedings, resolutions, reports, and correspondence.

Series II, Negotiations and Agreements, contains records of employee and union grievances, union and management proposals, negotiations proceedings and notes, contracts and agreements between the company and the union, umpire decisions in the case of grievances and procedures, and summaries of contract gains. These negotiation materials cover nearly the entire range of workman's rights and privileges. The span dates for this series range from 1942-1972.

Series III, Occupation Descriptions, contains occupation and job descriptions, and wage and rate charts.

Series IV, Union Election Materials, is composed of election notices, candidate propaganda, ballots, lists of candidates, and tally sheets for IUE elections on both the local and national levels, 1946-1967.

Series V, Correspondence, is a chronological arrangement of Local #755's correspondence files, which reflect the interaction with its members for assistance, politicians, other locals, District 7, Dayton-Miami Valley AFL-CIO, the state and national governing organizations, and community welfare organizations. Of special interest are the correspondence files relating to strikes. The span dates for this series range from 1940-1974.

Series VI, Financial Records, are financial statements and materials for IUE Local #755, 1945, 1947, 1956-1974, financial statements for the Montgomery County CIO Council, 1954-1955, 1958-1959, financial statements for IUE District #7, 1955-1956, and the Budget Committee Minutes, 1959.

Educational materials and programs comprise the bulk of the material in Series VII. Other materials include labor issues and events literature, leadership training, manuals, instructions on grievance procedures, records of education classes, teacher guides, educational meeting reports, Committee on Political Education (COPE) materials, labor rights and benefits information, quiz programs, and time studies. The span dates for this series range from 1938-1962.

Series VIII, Information Bulletins and Publications, contains notices to union members on union activities and events and a wide array of printed materials from the IUE and other inter union affiliates. These materials are mostly in the form of a regularly published newsletter. The span dates for this collection range from 1948-1967.

The basic arrangement of the various files is chronological within each series.

There are no restrictions on accessing material in this collection, however due to preservation concerns, original audio reels in the collection cannot be played in the reading room. Patrons may have access to reference copies. Items without reference copies can be digitized at the request of patron for the cost of creating a digital copy. Please provide at least two weeks advance notice if requesting audio reference copies. USe of digitized content is subject to conditions governing use.
