Deposition of Rev. Louis Donis, D.D. in Circuit Court of Wayne County, Indiana, in case of Milton Cain, et. al. vs. Chas. Lamb, et. al., 1890

 Item — Box: 5, Folder: 4, Item: 6

Scope and Contents

From the File:

These pamphlets deal with the United Brethren in Christ controversy of 1889-1896. Schism developed from a prohibition of membership in secret societies; the policy had long been a feature of the church. A liberal reform element sought to modify this ban. A conservative, or Radical, element, led by Milton Wright, fought the attempted changes. Court cases over which faction owned church property aggravated the quarrel, which eventually split the church. Courts held the “Liberals” to be the true church and ruled that the “Radicals” had seceded and organized a new society. Wilbur Wright authored two pamphlets supporting his father’s views.
