Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection consists primarily of official publications and newsletters, membership and financial records, and accounts of and plans for several climbing trips. In addition to a Super8 reel showing a climbing trip, the collection holds several maps of areas in the US and worldwide where its members had considered and/or undertaken climbing trips. 1967-2004.

Series I: Administrative Records; includes foundational documents, histories, minutes, membership, financial records, and a 21-page printed transcript of a 1996 interview regarding individual climbers by name and climbs undertaken. An electronic copy of the interview is available, MS691_e0001, 1975-2004.

Series II: Publications; includes newsletters, newspaper articles and clippings, instructional publications for the OCA and other related climbing and outdoor advocacy organizations, 1977-2004.

Series III: Event Materials; includes correspondence, planning, and accounts of several prospective and actual climbing trips, commercial maps of places in Asia, Europe, and North America, park maps, and elevation feature drawings for use in planning ascent and descent. Includes Super 8 reel of climbing at Clifton Gorge with accompanying note, 1 photograph of two women with notation, 1967-2004.

Conditions Governing Access

Electronic records in the collection are not accessible until they are fully processed. Physical access restriction for Analog AV materials too fragile to handle (reformat for access). Original machine dependable audio and video formats should not be used by patrons in the reading room, as it could be the last time the tape or reel will play. Rather, the original must be digitized upon request at the expense of the patron.
